If you have an Android device and somehow forget your password or lose it, you automatically lose all the important data you have in it including contacts. Since you don’t want that to happen, if you own an Android phone, you should back up Google Contacts. There may come a time when all the information stored in your Android device may get misplaced or worse still, lost.

It is times like those that you would wish that you had another backup option. In light of all this, you should look for other back up options available to you for your contacts. One of the easiest ways of backing up contacts is via a Gmail account. Once all the sensitive information has been backed up to your Gmail account, you will have the freedom to restore it when you want to. So, should you ever lose all the information, you will not have a hard time getting it all back.

Importing your contacts from Android to Gmail

After your Google account has been set on your Android device, always remember to allow the contacts be saved in your mail account. This will enable all the contacts you save in your phone to synchronize as with your Gmail account.

If your contacts are yet to sync with your Gmail account:

Click on the menu button then on “Contacts”

Locate and go to export/import

Export the contacts to the SD card then click on “OK”.

Doing this will see your data exported to your memory card. One you have done this, erase/delete all contacts to avoid confusion.

Click on “import or export” then select the option for “import from SD card”.

Choose the option to save the contacts to your Google account instead of the mobile device.

After a few minutes, all your contacts will have been backed up to your Gmail account.

Second alternative to backing up Gmail contacts

You may find it rather tedious to import your contacts to your micro SD card then transfer them to your Gmail account. It can also cause some confusion. The good news is that it is not the only back up option you have for your contacts. There is an option that syncs in your contacts with your Gmail account and you can get the contacts whenever you want. Here is how:

If you have no Gmail account, create one

Go to the mobile device’s menu tab, then settings and then settings then to sync.

Open the option “Google account”

Check the “sync contacts” option so that the contacts can saved in your Gmail account.

One of the most frustrating things when it comes to using online services is getting your data from a service. However, Google has been working on ways to make retrieving data from a service easier and enable Google back up. Google takeout is one of the tools that can be used for this process. Basically, Google takeout is a service from Google that can be used to retrieve data from an online service. To be able to use it, one needs to have a Google account. Currently, takeout supports the following services:

Buzz

+1 rated web content.

Google profiles.

Google+

Picasa web albums.

Contacts and circles

Docs

Blogger.

Voice

Reader

YouTube

With takeout, you can back up your Google+ circles, contacts and evens streams. Takeout will collect data in a zipped file for download. The good thing about Takeout is that it comes with the ability to archive everything. While this is a good thing, it can also mean that you will end up saving a lot of data, most of which may not be important. To ensure you only download and back up important data, ensure you click on ‘choose services’ to select preferred back up data.

Google back up – How to use Takeout

Using Google Takeout as Google back up is rather easy:

To Google takeout homepage and sign in to Google.

Choose the service you want to backup data from. It is possible to select all the services at a go or do it one by one based on your priority.

Click on the red ‘create archive’ button at the bottom of the page.

The backing up process starts by creating an archive file for your data.

This process may take a few seconds or minute, based on the size of the backup being created.

After the Google back up is ready, navigate to the download tab and tap on the download button.

You will need to re-authenticate your Google account after which the down load automatically starts. Once the downloading process completes, you can open the archive. The data will be well organized in folders.

Google back up – Why using Google takeout is a good idea

When it comes to creating backups for contacts or data, most backup tools create the archive in unreadable formats. This means that the user has to go through the process of converting the data to readable format to be able to transfer to other media. However, Takeout creates the archive is ready to read format. This means that transferring the data to other services is easy and less time consuming.

If you are one of those people who are always online, then you probably turn to Google every time you have a question. No matter how silly it may be, Google always seems to have an answer. This is probably what most people now use the term “Google” as a verb meaning search. You will often people say, “Google it”. It is by far the most popular search engine.

Other than search, Google also has other products including Google+ (a social networking site), Google Docs, Google Drive among many others. With all this products and services, one can’t help but wonder where Google stores all their data.

Apparently, Google has servers in the thousands and each has a specially designated purpose. Here are some of the serves and their designated tasks.

Google Backup Images – Some of the serves that backup Google information

Web servers:
These are the ones that have the responsibility of handling all queries entered on Google Search. When you enter a query, the web server will interact with e.g. ad, spelling, index etc and then give you results in HTML.

Data gathering server:
These organize and collect info for Google. They crawl or “spider” the internet through Googlebot in search of existing and newly added content. These servers index content update that index and also rank pages based on algorithms by Google search.

Index servers:
This is where most of the “magic” happens. These servers are the ones that return all documented ID’s corresponding with your queries.

Document servers:
These are the ones that store web page content’s document version. Each file contains files that have been stored in PF files, JPEG files and more. All these are stored in the different servers depending on the information category. Document servers give users snippets of data based on the search query. Since there are many index documents coming by the day, these servers use much more space than others.

Ad servers:
These servers are very important to both businesses and Google. It is a major source of revenue for Google and is also source of livelihood to many businesses worldwide. They manage Ads integral to Google AdSense and AdWords services. Ad servers and web servers interact with each other and determine the ads that are appropr to aniate for different queries.
